In February 2021, Renee Rienties, Angela Vissers, Maarten van Gageldonk and Anita Waltman officially started researching the ‘Manga & Anime Subculture’ in Japan and South Korea. Over the next two years, we will enter into an international partnership with these countries. We organize exchanges for participation, education and various art projects. We are going to show and experience a lot of this cool culture. Keep an eye on our website and Social Media for updates….

We organize an international project for international cooperation with the countries Japan and South Korea in 2021 and 2022. In these countries we work together with artists, cultural partners, schools, universities, entrepreneurs, local governments, companies, embassies, local people, ea. The collaboration is aimed at international participation with various target groups and education about the art movements Manga, Manhwa and Anime and the related subculture. Manga is a Japanese style of drawing for comics. In South Korea, the similar drawing style is called manwha. Anime is the Japanese animation film based on the manga style. In South Korea they also call it Aeni.

With this international collaboration, we want to increase our audience reach among young people between the ages of 12 and 25 (of course it is not limited to this age). The art movements manga and anime are part of an intriguing subculture for young people. We want to make this more known in the Netherlands, and in the east of the country in particular. We want to show that it is a professional art form with many different sides. To this end, we are in talks with various national and international parties. In this way we bring together an expert group with whom we will continue to work together in the coming years.

The influences of the manga and anime subculture can also be seen in other forms in the fine arts and street art. Because we highlight drawing in all its diversity, we also research and program these two art forms. We investigate Japanese and South Korean fine artists and street artists who are inspired by this subculture. This will be part of the education program but also of artist exchanges for murals, exhibitions, masterclasses and lectures.
